2020 AICP Exam Scholarships

The American Planning Association (APA) and the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) offer reduced AICP exam fee scholarships to two APA Colorado members every year. The purpose of the scholarship is to offer assistance to individuals who are unable to take the AICP exam due to financial hardships. APA Colorado has been allocated two scholarships for the May and/or November testing window each year. If the scholarships are not awarded, they are added to the pool for other applicants around the country.

First time exam candidates, AICP Candidate Pilot Program and previous but unsuccessful test-takers qualify for the scholarship. Scholarship recipients pay the reduced fees as follows:

  • Approved AICP Exam applicants: $75 (exam fee only. The fee is reduced from $425)
  • AICP Candidate Pilot Program Participants: $75 (exam fee only. The fee is reduced from $100)

Selection Criteria

Exam candidates must provide a written explanation of their financial hardship (including financial hardship caused by a budget cutback in a firm or agency), which necessitates the request. Additional considerations include:

  • Members of minorities shall be given preference.
  • The applicant(s) selected will be otherwise unlikely to take the exam without the reduced fee.
  • The applicant’s employer will not subsidize the exam fee.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the scholarship application form by July 31, 2020. Candidates must be members of the Colorado Chapter to qualify.
  2. Send your application to:   Shelia Booth, AICP (SBooth@apacolorado.org)

Additional Information

The exam application and the scholarship application are completely independent. For more information regarding the exam application, please visit http://www.planning.org/certification/Applying for the reduced fee does not guarantee you will qualify to sit for the exam. Because of the deadline for the exam and the time it takes for AICP to review candidate qualifications, scholarship applicants may need to pay the full exam costs and then be reimbursed if they are awarded the scholarship. Refunds may take up to 5 weeks to process.  APA Colorado will notify applicants by October whether they have been selected for the reduced fee scholarship. The Chapter may also select an alternate in case a scholarship winner does not complete the exam application process or does not qualify to sit for the exam.
