Call for Proposals: 2019 Western Planner & APA NM Conference

2019 Western Planner Conference
Planning our Places for a Changing Future

Call for Proposals - Deadline April 30, 2019

The Western Planner and the American Planning Association-New Mexico Chapter annual conference will be held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, September 8-11, 2019. The conference committee is seeking proposals for:

  • Full sessions (approximately 1.5 hours), either panels or individual presentations
  • Shorter individual presentations that can become part of full sessions

The conference theme is Planning our Places for a Changing Future. In the spirit of the “City Different” and in recognition of the elements that comprise our places, the conference tracks are Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. The schedule will accommodate about 40 panels and workshops. Presenters will be required to register for the conference.

We encourage panels that reflect the diversity of our places in the West by including more than one state and including city, town, rural, and tribal presentations on one topic. To support this, we are accepting proposals for individual presentations and will be assisting with combining them into panels. With your approval, we will post proposals for individual presentations on a web site to allow you to network with other individuals to create a panel. Conference organizers will also help with “matchmaking.”

We will also be looking for proposals that will engage the audience through Ted-talk style presentations, group discussion, workshops, and other interactive methods.

Presentations are expected to meet requirements for Certification Maintenance credit for the American Institute of Certified Planners:

  • Designed to meet a specific planning-related training objective, with an educational purpose or objective clearly identified
  • Address the demonstrated educational needs of AICP members (
  • Appropriate depth and scope for planners with at least four years of professional experience after earning a 2-year master's degree in planning (i.e., not introductory material)
  • Unbiased and non-promotional
  • Led by one or more experts on the subject matter

Conference organizers will follow up to ensure that proposed panels meet these requirements.

The deadline for proposals is April 30, 2019. (Note that you may submit individual presentation proposals and submit a revised proposal for a panel by the deadline.)

Please tell us about your proposal by filling out this survey:
